Ask any Shopify or Amazon seller which analytics tool they trust, and GA4 comes up first. It's free, it's already installed, and it's been sitting in the tech stack so long nobody remembers setting it up. So when the ecommerce analytics vs Google Analytics 4 question comes up on a team, the instinct is usually "GA4 already does this, right?"
Sometimes. Not always. And the gap got more confusing after GA4 replaced Universal Analytics and rewired how conversions and attribution get counted. A lot of teams who trusted their UA numbers for years suddenly found GA4 telling a different story, with no clear explanation why.
Here's the real distinction, before we go further: GA4 is a web analytics tool built around events and sessions. Ecommerce analytics platforms are built around orders, margin, and channel-blended performance. Those are two different jobs. GA4 was never designed to answer "am I profitable on Meta after COGS and shipping," and it's not really fair to knock it for that.
Why This Comparison Keeps Coming Up
The confusion isn't really about GA4 being bad. It's about scope. GA4 sits on your website, watches what visitors do, and reports it back for free. That's a genuinely useful thing to have. The problem shows up when teams start using it as the single source of truth for revenue decisions it was never built to make.
Add in the UA to GA4 migration, and you've got a lot of marketing leads second-guessing numbers they used to trust blindly. Conversion counts moved. Attribution windows changed. Channel groupings shifted. So the question "is GA4 enough" got asked again, this time by people who'd already built dashboards around the old assumptions.
What GA4 Is Actually Built to Do
GA4 runs on an event-based model instead of the old session-and-pageview structure. Everything, a click, a scroll, a purchase, is an event, and GA4 stitches those events into engaged sessions and funnels within a single property.

Item views, cart adds, completed orders, all counted, all timestamped.
What none of that tells you: whether that purchase was actually profitable once you factor in ad spend, product cost, and fulfillment.
Where GA4 Breaks Down for Ecommerce Reporting
This is where the ecommerce analytics vs Google Analytics 4 debate actually gets interesting, because the gaps aren't small.
Start with attribution. GA4's data-driven attribution model tends to lean toward Google's own channels, Search and YouTube, over Meta or TikTok. [VERIFY] the exact weighting, but the pattern is well documented across the industry: brands running heavy paid social spend often see GA4 undercount those channels relative to what the ad platforms themselves report.
Then there's the money problem. GA4 shows revenue. It doesn't know your COGS, your shipping cost, or your ad spend, so it can't blend any of that into a real profit number. You get top-line revenue and nothing underneath it.
Smaller properties also run into sampling and thresholding, where GA4 quietly drops or aggregates data to protect user privacy, sometimes without a visible flag that it happened. If you're watching a metric move and can't explain why, that might be why.
And GA4 only sees your website or app. No Amazon. No marketplace data. No offline sales. If you're selling on more than one channel, that's a real blind spot, not a minor one. Add in the iOS tracking gaps from privacy changes over the last few years, and a meaningful chunk of sessions are misattributed or missing entirely before you even open the report.
What 'Ecommerce Analytics' Means as a Category
This is the category that grew up specifically to fill that gap. Tools built to pull Shopify or Amazon order data, ad platform spend, and GA4 session data into one blended view, instead of leaving you to reconcile three tabs by hand.
The shift is from session-based reporting to order and profit-based reporting. Instead of "how many sessions converted," you're asking "what's my true ROAS," "what's contribution margin per SKU," or "what's blended CAC once I account for every channel I'm spending on." Different questions, different math, different data model entirely.
Most of these platforms sit on top of a data warehouse rather than sampling live queries the way GA4 does. But lay that funnel data next to Shopify order data and ad spend, and you might find the campaign is losing money on every order once shipping and product cost are factored in. GA4 would never flag that. It's not losing sessions, it's losing margin, and those are different problems that look identical in a session-only report.
How to Tell Which One You Actually Need Right Now
A quick checklist, if you're not sure where you land:
Single channel, on-site focus
Situation: Just Shopify, or just one paid channel, and you mainly care about on-site behavior
Verdict: GA4 alone probably covers what you need
Multi-channel, profit focus
Situation: Selling on Shopify and Amazon, or running spend across Meta, Google, and TikTok at once
Verdict: You need a blended layer, because no single platform's native reporting will give you a true profit number
The manual-reporting tell
Situation: Someone on your team exports GA4, Shopify, and ad platform data into a spreadsheet every week to piece together a real ROAS figure
Verdict: That's the signal to consolidate. If it takes a person and a spreadsheet to answer a basic profitability question, the tooling is behind where the business already is
